How to make a poll in Slack

Slack doesn’t have a built-in poll feature. Teams either vote with emoji reactions, install a poll app, or share a poll link.

Short answer: Quick vote with reactions: post the question with each option on its own line, give each option an emoji, and ask people to react. Count the reactions.

Steps: how to make a poll in Slack

  1. Quick vote with reactions: post the question with each option on its own line, give each option an emoji, and ask people to react. Count the reactions.
  2. Poll app: an admin (or anyone allowed to add apps) installs a poll app such as Polly or Simple Poll from the Slack Marketplace.
  3. With an app installed, type /poll in a channel (the exact command depends on the app), fill in the question and options, and send.
  4. No-install option: create a PollCraft poll and paste the vote link into the channel. Voters send reply links back to you in a DM.

Menus move between app versions, so labels may differ slightly on your device.

Limits to know

  • Reaction votes are public, and nothing stops someone reacting to every option.
  • Poll apps may need admin approval and some charge on larger workspaces.
  • Workflow Builder (paid plans) can collect form answers but doesn’t draw a results chart.

When a link poll works better

You can’t install apps in your workspace, you want an anonymous vote, or people outside Slack need to vote too.

PollCraft polls open in any browser with no account, come with a QR code and a full-screen results view, and can run as a secret ballot on one device. How votes reach you.

Questions people ask

Does Slack have a built-in poll?

No. Slack suggests emoji reactions for simple votes, or installing a poll app from the Slack Marketplace.

How do I make an anonymous poll in Slack?

Reactions are never anonymous. Some poll apps offer an anonymous option; alternatively, share a PollCraft link with anonymous mode on and collect replies by DM.
